In 2004 Burning Man added 10 principles to act as guidelines that were written by Larry Harvey to show a reflection of the ethos of the burning man community. One of the most commonly heard and well known principle being 'Leave No Trace' (better known as MOOP). For those who don't know MOOP is an acronym for 'Matter Out of Place' and was created to help Black Rock Citizens understand the importance of leaving no trace. However many 'burners' order countless things online, buy cheap poorly made single use costumes & accessories (thinking about those throwaway glow sticks, makes me livid) and even more travel to Nevada by plane & end up buying everything cheap from Walmart before getting to the playa.
Pictured above on Yana, is a captain hat from Love Market Hats that was designed and made in San Diego by Lauren Nicole.
If you saw Florum's Burning Man Style Guide from 2017 (click here to check it out), you might recognize the one of a kind leopard captain hat. I choose to use this hat again in the burning man style guide for 2018, with the intention of reminding us all that buying quality made items means they last. This hat is a testament to why a quality item will last if taken care of. Since adding this hat to my costume collection last year I have worn the captain hat from Love Market Hats to many festivals including 2017's back to back Oregon Eclipse and Burning Man, parties, fundraisers and even had friends borrow it. As you can see it still looks in perfect condition and is still at the start of its long life as one of my favorite costume pieces.

“ By shopping ethically & responsibly, you’ll end up buying quality made items, while also drastically reducing your waste (aka MOOP) both before and after Burning Man, instead of just being conscious during the week.”
Both Yana and Kylee are wearing vintage Victoria Secret nightgowns. One of my favorite things to search for whenever entering a curated vintage shop or a charity shop is silk nightgowns. As you can see these vintage silk nightgowns were the perfect outfit to sport on the hot journey through the town and desert of Gerlach, Nevada on the way to Black Rock City.
One of the two things that you can buy at Burning Man is ice and coffee.
With ice being quiet the commodity, you'll soon find the importance of a cooler that really works in the desert heat and has proven ice retention.
An essential item that I encourage all burners to consider investing in, is a cooler that is both built to last and holds a lifetime warranty.
Grizzly Coolers are one of my favorites because they are Made in the Iowa, created with environmentally friendly pressure-injected insulation, and come in beautiful colors like this seafoam green.

One of my absolute favorite quotes from Vivienne Westwood that I constantly remind myself is 'Buy less, choose well.' To incorporate this principle into my burn, I choose minimalism by creating a capsule wardrobe for burning man. A capsule collection normally consists of basics, that can be worn different ways with different accessories.
A beautiful piece that can be styled many different ways, is the ethically made one piece silver swimsuit HER. from The LIDO designed by Brooke Ulrich. Buying a 'base' piece for your burning man capsule wardrobe that you can reuse and wear in 'the real world,' is an important part of reducing your waste after the burn.
Desert Wanderer
I love the simplicity of the vegan handcrafted caged belt from TheGlowStrobe, as it's simple to wear yet it gives a really bold statement. It paired perfectly with the silver one piece from The LIDO and the new vegan black tar mini festival hydration pack from Dan Pak.
Please note that I wanted to be sure and include hydration packs in this years burning man guide, as staying hydrated on the playa is one of the most important things that you can do. What I love about Dan Pak is that no only do their festival hydration packs look cute, however they hold 1 liter of water. Last year on the playa I used my smokey holographic festival hydration pack every day and every night, so I was delighted to see new styles aka the mini backpack pictured above.
“Black Rock gives us all a chance to heal, to become ourselves.”
I Robot
“1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.”
Playa Goddess
One of my absolute favorite pieces that I got for the playa last year, was the sexy sequin goddess robe from Fringe and Epaulette. Not only is each robe custom made for the customer in Brooklyn, New York, however the goddess rober is also reversible. Last year I styled the robe with the sequins on the outside (click here to check out last years look) and this year I choose to show off the beautiful silver velvet side.
This is truly a beautiful investment piece that I really look forward to wearing each year on the playa.
“Buy less, choose well”
This 'Tutu Tuesday' outfit was inspired by the pink holographic Dan Pak and styled with a few things from my own closet and Everything a few pieces that I already have To show just how easy it is to put together an outfit out of pieces you might already have, here is a look on Yana for Tutu Tuesday. The horse bodysuit is actually a one piece swimsuit, that I have had for years. The adorable tutu with the satin ribbon was added to my costume collection after burning man last year, it was handmade by my friends own mother with just a few materials and some satin ribbon. The blinged out captain hat was made by my friend in London, it is amazing the creativity that burning man brings out.
Stay hydrated
I once heard that if you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. So one of my favorite accessories on the playa to help stay hydrated is a fun festival hydration pack, like this shiny pink one from Dan Pak.
My favorite aspect of Dan Pak is not the obvious (which obviously is how cute festival hydration packs are), however I love that they also give a portion of their profits to charity. There is nothing better then seeing a company be responsible and give back.
This retro raver pink Dan Pak is a bit bigger than the mini Dan Pak and holds 2 liters (equivalent to 4 water bottles).

“Belief is thought at rest.”
With the most sustainable and eco aspect of Burning Man being no MOOP, one essential item that every Black Rock City citizen needs is a utility belt.
I love Ornate Reverie and how many pockets & pouches their handmade utility belts have. There is literally room for all the little things (like your ID, snacks, trash, phone) you might need while exploring the playa.

Sine my first burn in 2015, Leopard Mafia has been an essential part of my Thursday afternoon during my week in Black Rock City as the leopards and spotted creatures, prowl across the playa and do a take over of Burning Man sound camp Funky Town. Created by Nicole DiBrino after discovering that the proper introduction to herself was the 'Spirit of the Jaguar,' she has launched a movement of leopards at both BRC and Afrika Burn.

“Wilderness is not a luxury but necessity of the human spirit.”
Black Rock City is a city erected in Black Rock Desert (yes DESERT). As a result of its location its often extremely hot throughout the week, combined with the playa dust & the result of being in the desert for a whole week, you'll quickly understand why the need for such a minimal look.

“Burning Man is misunderstood by many, but my experience was one of human love, cooperation and higher consciousness.”
One of my favorite festival brands that I have bought and worn over the years is Spirithoods. Not only do they help bring out your inner animal, however the brand donates back 10% of its net profits to the conservation of endangered animals. Their hoods are all handmade in Los Angeles with faux fur and are designed to last a lifetime. Recently I have loved the new styles and designs that Spirithoods has created to bring out the inner animal in all of us.

Burning Man is located in Black Rock City, which is the desert. You might think that sun protection is at the top of everyone's list of priorities, however with so much to see on the playa it often gets forgotten. One of the easiest ways to protect your skin besides using a non toxic natural sunscreen, is to carry a parasol with you during the day.
